Brush you can turn into mulch
- A tree came down and the branches are piled up in the yard.
- You had a tree trimmed and want the brush gone, not stacked at the curb.
- You want mulch for flower beds, paths or around new plantings without buying it by the bag.
- You cleared overgrown shrubs and have more brush than the trash will take.
- You don’t want a burn pile.
How wood chipping works
Branches go into a chipper, a machine that feeds them through spinning blades and shoots out chips. It’s done at your house, so there’s nothing to haul to the dump first.
You choose what happens to the chips. Keep them for tree mulching around trees and beds, or have them hauled away. Fresh chips work well as mulch.
Big logs don’t go through a chipper. Those get cut into rounds for firewood or hauled off.
Using wood chips in Columbia yards
- Keep chips off the trunk: Spread mulch a few inches deep and pull it back from the base of the tree. Piled against the trunk, it holds moisture and invites rot.
- Common trees we chip: Pine, oak, sweetgum and crape myrtle branches, since those are the common trees around Columbia. Pine and hardwood chips both work as mulch.
- Chips from a sick tree: If the branches came from a tree with a pest or disease problem, don’t spread the chips around healthy trees. Ask the crew to haul them away.

Questions about tree Mulching & Wood Chipping
Can I keep the wood chips?
Yes. Ask for the chips to be left in a pile where you want them, and use them as mulch around trees and beds. Or have them hauled away.
What is the difference between wood chips and mulch?
Wood chips are what comes out of a chipper: bits of wood, bark and leaves mixed together. Mulch is any material spread over soil to hold moisture and block weeds. Fresh wood chips work as mulch.

Chipping on site is the usual way, because there’s nothing to load first. Hauling the chips or the brush away is an option when you don’t want them.
